Taylah Carroll

Releases

Hallmarked by commanding vocals and seamless transitions between vulnerability and strength, Taylah Carroll’s music melds confessional and dreamy alt-folk, with pop sensibilities and introspective lyricism. Today, the Naarm/Melbourne musician releases her debut EP Have A Party On Me, out now via [PIAS] Australia.

LISTEN

Have A Party On Me features six-tracks written by the singer-songwriter across the past three-years. With lyrics forming the centerpiece of her craft, exploring themes of self-actualisation, growth and loss, rich with brooding contemplation and punctuated by observational wit. This collection reveals the dissection of what Taylah sees and hears around her, whether observing a friend mid-breakup or describing a childhood walk through the suburbs is by turns charming and withering.

Like previously shared singles ‘Gumption,' ‘Intentions’ and ‘Have A Party On Me,' ‘I’m Not Sold’ germinates from the minutiae of everyday life, budding out from a single surface-level interaction to unfurl something deeper and more honest about Taylah’s sense of self. “I wrote this song after I had an argument with my little sister. Though spurred by the row, it's really a song about growing up. The line 'Make a woman out of yourself' is the heart of it. It represents that fear you often feel in your early/mid-twenties, the pressure to get your ducks in a socially approved row,” she shares. ‘Keep You Well,' meanwhile, brings that domesticity more directly into the music, originally written on the floor of Carroll’s bathroom, channeling the privacy and intimacy of that space with its pretty yet intrusive found household sounds, at once both jarring and familiar.

Taylah? She's a natural. And rightly, this song just feels so easy for her from the woody vintage bass to the Nancy Sinatra-like stride.
