Karl comes from a background in studio engineering, where as a teenager he trained in both digital and tape production, and early in his career he has been heavily involved writing and producing a number of platinum selling musical projects, including as the frontman of iconic NZ band Supergroove.

Notable among his achievements as a composer, is his acclaimed score for the film 'Come To Daddy' starring Elijah Wood, which earned him the prestigious APRA Screen Music Award for Best Music in a Feature Film. The score was lauded by publications such as Variety, Rue Morgue, and Film Music Magazine, and was recognized as one of the Best Scores of 2020 by the Film Music Institute.

2024 sees Karl scoring Ant Timpson's 'Bookworm', starring Elijah Wood, Nell Fisher, and Michael Smiley, as well as 'Never Look Away' directed by Lucy Lawless and scored with Jason Smith, premiering at the World Documentary Competition at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and SXSW. Other recent work includes 'Uproar' (with Julian Dennison, Rhys Darby and Minnie Driver, d. Hamish Bennett and Paul Middleditch), Nathan Price's feature documentary for Universal 'The Subtle Art of Not Giving A #@%!' (Winner, Best Original Music in a Feature Film APRA Screen Music Awards 2023) and Gaysorn Thavat’s 'The Justice of Bunny King'.

Karl's Television work has aired on platforms including BBC One, Netflix, Stan, BBC America and Seven Network. TV projects in 2024 include drama series 'Testify' (TVNZ) and 'Friends Like Her' (Three) as well as true crime series 'Black Coast Vanishings' (Three/Canal+) with Rob Thorne and climate change documentary series 'Dynamic Planet' (PBS/Neon/Sky). Karl’s soundtrack to the 'Black Hands' series (prod. Warner Bros, series producer Robin Scholes) won Best Original Score in a Series at the APRA Screen Music Awards 2021.
